Corneal Implants
Corneal implants, such as Intacs, are used as a method for overcoming mild cases of myopia or nearsightedness, providing a replacement for glasses or contact lenses, and an alternative to permanent surgeries which cut or remove tissue from the cornea.
In corneal surgery, two plastic ring segments are implanted in the outer layer of the cornea through a tiny incision near the upper edge of the cornea near the eyelid. These rings exert pressure on corneal tissue, altering the shape of the cornea to improve vision. Unlike irreversible laser surgery, corneal implants are removable.
