Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT)
Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer, or GIFT, combines the egg and sperm outside the body then places them immediately into the woman's fallopian tubes, where fertilization then takes place. The main difference between GIFT compared to other techniques like in vitro fertilization (IVF) is that fertilization takes place in healthy fallopian tubes, rather than in a laboratory.
During GIFT procedures, the woman’s ovaries are stimulated using medications to help the body create multiple eggs. The eggs are collected, and the best quality eggs are immediately mixed with active sperm and placed in a special catheter. The mixture of eggs and sperm is injected directly into the woman’s fallopian tubes through the catheter, which has been laparoscopically inserted. Finally, the woman is closely monitored for early signs and symptoms of pregnancy, as well as having regular blood tests performed.
